Porsche spring plates – stock, sport, racing
Spring plates are very important part of Porsche torsion bar suspension principle and a big game changer with long tradition.
How did everything started?
Porsche presskit article marks 10th August 1931 as a very important date when Ferdinand Porsche applied for a torsion bar suspension patent, which had a hughe impact on automotive manufacturing world. The usual chassis designs used heavy leaf springs which were known from carriage building.
Torsion bar suspension principle was revolutionary
Leaf springs were quite different to the slim torsion bars that could be installed lengthways or crossways. Torsion bars are connected to the axle via the lever of a suspension arm. Torsion bar design did save space and weight and also offered better wheel traction on uneven road surfaces and reduced rolling on corners.
How the torsion bar suspension works?
Torsion bar is round rod or bar that twists under load. It resists twisting and has a tendency to return to its original position when twisted. Torsion bar is usually long spring-steel rod with one end held rigidly in a torsion tube to the frame and the other end twisted by a lever connected to the axle arm. This lever is known as a spring plate.
One of the most important features of spring plates is the use of raw material, which has great impact on the final quality of the spring plates, available on the market.
At Prekom we are offering wide variety of spring plates for different Porsche models.
The material we use for spring plates production is carefully sellected to satisfy the highest quality standards. The complete production processes are made in house – from design, development, welding, rubber vulcanization, assembling and packing, to be able to control the quality of each phase.
Our spring plate range covers all 356 (A, B and C) models, 911 – F and G models, 964, 912 and also several transaxle Porsche models like 924, 944, 968. Each available in stock, sport or motorsport applications.
Apart from the complete spring plates, we are also offering stock/OEM, sport and motorsport versions of spring plate bushings DIY set. The spring plates bushings sets are available in different hardness depending on stock/OEM, sport or racing/motorsport use.
In short, there are plenty of options to choose from for every customer need.
Why it is important to replace your old and worn-down spring plate with the new one?
After a long use or when your Porsche is regularly driven hard, original bushings get worn, can brake down or even tear apart. In the worst case scenario rubber bushings are worn to the point where especially under heavy loads spring plates get into contact with cover plates. So in order to maintain rear-end stability, handling and ride quality, spring plate bushings should be in perfect condition.
When changing factory spring plates with Prekom adjustable units, you can improve handling and at the same time improve performance of the legendary rear-end of your classic Porsche. Prekom adjustable spring plates make sure you can fine tune your ride height so the time consuming disassembly of your rear suspension (to adapt the ride hight by adapting the splines) is now the thing of the past.
INSTALLATION TIP: To unscrew spring plate clamping bolts, use our 31398 double ended spring plate wrench, which was developed with ease of use in mind.
